Nutrition Symposium targets Public Well-being

For Release Upon Receipt - Saturday, March 17, 2018

Residents keen on knowing how the food they consume affects their health have the opportunity to do so at a Nutrition Symposium on Saturday. They will also be given free health checks.

Planned by the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, the symposium takes place at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed from 4:00pm – 8:00pm.

Symposium Web-3-14-2018.jpgThe highly topical Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax implemented at a rate of 10% in 2015 will be discussed by Director of the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre Professor Alafia Samuel, one of the principal investigators assessing the impact of the tax, with particular focus on the lessons learnt.

“The presentation by Professor Samuel should show how that tax has impacted the purchasing of sugar-sweetened beverages, and how that impact is a positive step in preserving the health of persons who would normally consume such beverages that contribute directly to obesity which has a direct correlation to Type 2 Diabetes,” said Dr Damian Cohall, chair of the Nutrition Symposium Planning Committee.

Other presentations will focus on home-prepared food as a risk factor for obesity among Barbadian children, weight and health perceptions by adults and adolescents and the Barbados Trailway Project, a nature trail to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles. This health and wellness initiative is aimed at converting Barbados’ old train line into a 16 kilometre multi-use heritage fruitscaped trail.

“Home prepared meals are always better but sometimes we’re not aware of the necessary nutrition and food groups that are required especially for children. Sometimes it might be easier for parents and guardians to just give in to the wishes of their children even in foods prepared for home,” Dr Cohall explained.

Additionally, the symposium would feature a series of poster presentations along with free cholesterol, blood and other health checks.

Other presenters include: Dean in the Faculty of Medical Sciences Dr Peter Adams, a principal investigator for the Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network, a research study that examines lifestyles, eating habits, and health behaviors; Dr Thea Scantlebury-Manning, who will be examining sodium and potassium intake; lecturer Dr Tara Inniss, part of the group looking at the Barbados Trailway Project; lecturer in family medicine, Dr. JoannePaul-Charlesand Dr Pamela Gaskin, who will present a paper on food from home and its impact on cardiovascular health.

The symposium signals the start of a health and wellness-focused lecture series as part of yearlong celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of The UWI.
